Mandalas, Deities & Teachers on wood
The following items of art are unique to the Senge Monasteries. This genre of art on boards is not recorded in any book or reference materials I have been able to find. They are all made at the Sange Monasteries and as far as i know are the only existing forms of this Tibetan Art. I had thought that they may have been originally made as doors for other Tibetan Furniture, but saw no signs of the pegging for hinges. They may have been used in the fronts of altars inside of the temples, but I again saw no signs that these had ever been placed inside of an altar frame. These have been viewed by a representative of the Tibetan government that is familiar with the monasteries and he confirms that these are indeed from the monasteries and he likewise has never seen this genre of Tibetan art before. I have a few older paintings of this genre, dating to the 13th century that i will make available later once restorations have been completed. The exact history or explanation of these was probably lost forever during the tumultuous 1950s and 60s when many monks and lamas lost their lives. Our best speculation as to the nature of this unique genre is that they were painted as part of the teaching at the Sange Monasteries, especially since they are basically the royal art academies of Tibetan Buddhism.

TEMPLE ART
The followiong are jiantang or temple wall paintings on cloth. Since they were on cloth the Tibetans of Senge were able to remove them from the various temples in March of 1958 just prior to the brutal killings of the monks and general populace which coincided with the complete destruction of the various temples and halls of both the Upper and Lower Senge Monasteries. Unfortunately the Chinese authorities for years made it a point of "borrowing" the surviving art work, ostensibly to display in museums, only to never disclose which museum they were in and have never returned a single piece. These surviving pieces of Buddhist art were removed from Tibet in 2006 for their safe keeping and to assure that the monasteries would be adequately compensated for their heritage art work.
