This is a painting of the 1st person to be given the title of Panchen Lama, Losang Chokyi Gyaltsen, (1570-1662 AD) and was quite possibly painted during his lifetime. Losang was the main teacher of the Great 5th Dali Lama, and it was the 5th Dali lama that enthroned Losang and all of his later reincarnations as the Panchen Lama. The last Panchen Lama died in 1989 after having been imprisoned by the Chinese for 14 years. Our best speculation as to the nature of this unique genre is that they were painted as part of the teaching at the Sange Monasteries, especially since the Sange Monasteries are basically the royal art academies of Tibetan Buddhism. The term Panchen is Tibetan for master of knowledge. The Panchen Lamas are the abbots of the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, founded by the 1st Dali lama in 1447. The Great 5th Dali Lama had a vision of Losang Chokyi Gyaltsen as indivisible from Amitabha Buddha; Amitabha is the heavenly guru of Avalokiteshvara and it is only fitting that he also be the earthly teacher of the Dali Lama. This painting comes with a Certificate Of Authenticity and other background documents and historical notes.
