Tibetan Buddhist Art
I have four categories of Tibetan Buddhist Art on this page. The first category is maunuscript covers or book covers, some with mantras on one side and cannon depictions on the other. The second category is a genre of Buddhist Art unique to the Sange Monasteries, paintings on boards, these are quite rare and have been fully authenticated and examined by a representative of the Tibetan Government as have many of the Tibetan furniture items Baronet offers (note that there are two paintings of a different category in this genre, one a painting on a board with no cloth backing and one a painting on leather). The 3rd category are temple wall hangings from either the AVALOKITESHVARA temple or the prayer assembly hall at the Sange monastery. Each piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, iconographic explanations and supporting documents.
Baronet offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of Tibetan Art from a culture that is under heavy attack and will have a very difficult time to survive.
MANUSCRIPT COVERS~~When I first saw these manuscript covers I figured that it was something that you could put over your doorway and reverse it for a change as they have deities on one side and the 6-syllable mantra on the other. Never did it enter my mind that these were manuscript covers; hey, they are way too large for that! When I was given a tour of the archival libraries of one of the monasteries in the Golden Valley I saw that they were infact manuscript covers as there were several of them up on the higher shelves. This size dates back to the 13th century and they are typically painted on the inside with canonical depictions just as these are.

Mandalas, Deities & Teachers on wood
The following items of art are totally unique to the Sange Monasteries. This genre of art on boards is not recorded in any book or reference materials I have been able to find. They are all made at the Sange Monasteries and as far as i know are the only existing forms of this Tibetan Art. I had thought that they may have been originally made as doors for other Tibetan Furniture, but saw no signs of the pegging for hinges. They may have been used in the fronts of altars inside of the temples, but I again saw no signs that these had ever been placed inside of an altar frame. These have been viewed by a representative of the Tibetan government that is familiar with the monasteries and he confirms that these are indeed from the monasteries and he likewise has never seen this genre of Tibetan art before. I have a few older paintings of this genre, dating to the 13th century that i will make available later once restorations have been completed. The exact history or explanation of these was probably lost forever during the tumultuous 1950s and 60s when many monks and lamas lost their lives. Our best speculation as to the nature of this unique genre is that they were painted as part of the teaching at the Sange Monasteries, especially since they are basically the royal art academies of Tibetan Buddhism. |

Temple Art
The main Assembly or Prayer Hall and the Bodhisatava Avalokiteshvara Temple at the Lower Sange Monastery were partially destroyed during the attack on the monastery during the Cultural Revolution by the Red Guard in 1972 and also previously in March of 1958. The monks and Lamas that survived these attacks went into hiding until 1988. They took with them as much of the art work and relics that they had time to save. Some hid in the village and others went to caves in the region. In 1988 Gedun Chok Drub under the guidance of the Geshe of Lower Sange demolished the two structures and started a rebuilding project that continues today. They decided to replace all of the interior wall hangings as the art work that they had salvaged would not fit in to the new design and they also wanted fresh designs and colors. A friend of the monastery, a Muslim named Yan Fe Gu purchased all of the wall hangings to give the monastery seed money for their reconstruction. Baronet has been working with Yan and the monastery since 2003 collecting and preserving the art from the Sange Monasteries. We do not know which art came from the Assembly hall and which came from the Temple, what we do know is that this art all came from the Lower Sange Monastery from one of those two buildings. New paintings were created to replace these as the centuries had left them rather soiled. Some have the kyungbur incorporated into the painting. These were painted at different times, the youngest is the LW014 with the mantra on the back side, dating to the late 19th or very early 20th century; while the LW001, LW002, LW003, LW005, LW012 and LW13 are the oldest and date to the beginning of the 15th century. The original temple built in the 11th century was destroyed by a mudslide when the banks of a small lake in the mountains directly above the temple gave way during a severe rain storm. The mountain side soil stability had been compromised by the deforestation that had been going on for centuries. There existed stories handed down about the storm and the mudslide and these were confirmed in 1988 when the monks were digging a new foundation for the temple on the original site; they uncovered many buried metal statures and other artifacts suggesting a catastrophic mudslide supporting the oral histories.
