Manuscript Covers
When I first saw these manuscript covers I figured that it was something that you could put over your doorway and reverse it for a change as they have deities on one side and the 6-syllable mantra on the other. Never did it enter my mind that these were manuscript covers; hey, they are way to large for that! When I was given a tour of the archival libraries of one of the monasteries in the Golden Valley I saw that they were infact manuscript covers as there were several of them up on the higher shelves. This size dates back to the 13th century and they are typically painted on the inside with canonical depictions just as these are.

The Miscellaneous Art
Our Miscellaneous Art is a genre of Tibetan Art that is unique to the Golden Valley as far as we have been able to determine. The two framed pieces are definitely in a class by themselves: the usual technique for Ser Shong (Rebgong) art is to glue a cloth to wood and coat it with fine clay that is sanded smooth, whereas these are minus the cloth. There were 5 of the framed paintings that we were presented with, but 3 of them were so degraded that the identities of the deities was impossible to determine. The clay used was sanded smooth, but the wood grain and oils makes it very difficult for the clay to adhere. These are excellent examples of "fine line art."
