Where do the Tibetan Buddhist altars come from?
The majority of these altars are from the monks' & lamas' residences in Upper Sange Monastery & come with a certificate of authenticity brush-signed by a monk at that monastery. For the most part, these altars were used in residences as altars. Some came from older temples or from a lama who had died. Early in 2004, most of the monks' residences at Upper Sange (Wutun in Chinese) Monastery were demolished to make way for new residential compounds. Because the new compounds were built with separate shrine- or meditation-rooms with built-in altars, these portable altars were no longer needed. Tibetans typically do not revere antiques the way Westerners do, so the furniture was willingly sold. In October of 2004, Baronet had the majority of these altar tables shipped to Vancouver, WA. A second shipment arrived in October of 2005. About 10 stragglers have yet to arrive.

The following altar tables are Han altar tables from the Gansu province. They have some of the same elements as the Tibetan altar tables; the kyungbur, the door hinging, and the door pulls. The painting is done on a clay surface that is glazed over the bare wood. The iconic elements are from the Buddhist tradition: however, in the place of Snow Lions you will see the guardian foo dogs that are depicted in the same fashion with a similar meaning.
